Pilot Career Guide
Everything you need to know to become a professional airline pilot.
How to Become an Airline Pilot
Becoming an airline pilot follows a well-defined path. At FlighTrain, we've refined this path over four decades to be as efficient and effective as possible.
- Step 1 — Earn your Private Pilot License (PPL).
- Step 2 — Complete Instrument Rating (IR).
- Step 3 — Earn your Commercial Pilot License (CPL) with Multi-Engine Rating.
- Step 4 — Become a Certified Flight Instructor (CFI / CFII) and build hours.
- Step 5 — Reach 1,500 hours and earn your ATP certificate.
- Step 6 — Interview with a regional airline and begin your airline career.
Career Outlook & Compensation
Airline pilot demand remains historically strong. First-year regional first officers typically earn $90,000–$110,000, while major airline captains regularly exceed $300,000 with excellent benefits and retirement contributions.
